State Bank of Speer’s Jay Glatz on Relationship Banking

For over a decade,  State Bank of Speer has entrusted Cornerstone Business Solutions in referring their business customers for merchant services solutions.  But if first impressions are everything, I’m not sure they would have chosen us based upon our first meeting!

I remember the meeting like it was yesterday.  As a much younger and enthusiastic bank card representative, I rode along with my partner for our first meeting with this expanding, well established bank.  All along the way, I drank coffee (a lot of coffee) and became more and more excited about the meeting.  I had over an hour to think of everything I had to say.  We arrived and were escorted to the board room where we were seated with bank President, Mike Stahl and Jay Glatz as well as a few others.  So of course, nearly exploding with excitement, we had barely finished shaking hand and sitting down when I burst into a torrent of my sales presentation at about 120 mph!  For the nearly 5 minutes (for a 30 minute presentation) that I could rapid fire talk without taking a breath, they all just sat there wide-eyed, gripping the arms of their chair in astonishment!  I was completely oblivious, until I finally took a breath and Mike made a hilarious comment about it that broke the ice for everyone.

I learned a valuable lesson that day that business isn’t about fancy, fast talking presentations, but it’s about people, and relationships.  I’m grateful that Mike and Jay took the time to get to know me as a person and gave Cornerstone the opportunity to serve their clients.  I’ve always felt an extra special commitment to serving their customers as I’ve learned that they have very high standards for customer service.  Their customers are more often than not, friends of the business.  It’s a philosophy I’ve seen and adopted myself.

Jay Glatz , Vice President of Marketing,  particularly embodies that core trait and I’m proud to call him a friend now as well.  I hope you appreciate this few minutes of him I’ve captured on video.  You may also notice, I’ve learned to actually listen occasionally and I also kept it to one small cup of coffee for this interview!

Automotion’s Russell Herman: Auto Repair and Earning Customer Loyalty

Automotion is not only a valuable customer, but owner Russell Herman has also been a major influence on Cornerstone Business Solution’s Gift and Loyalty card program offerings.  Russell started as a Cornerstone Business Solutions credit card processing client.  Shortly after, I became a loyal customer of his as well.  Not too long into our relationship, he began asking me about specific loyalty programs and with his direction, I’ve been able to provide some unique loyalty solutions.

What I love about Russell, is although he is incredibly skilled as a mechanic, he’s just as talented at marketing, building a business and customer relationships.  I’ve learned so much about the value of long-term customer loyalty from him, and how programs can be implemented to foster life long customer relationships.  I’m always grateful when he takes the time to share with me, particularly on how other retailers can utilize my loyalty programs.  On this day, I was particularly excited that he allowed me to capture him on film as he shares for everyone his customer philosophy.

Business owners will learn a little bit from this interview on an effective use of a loyalty program that keeps customers coming back.  Everyone else will appreciate his tips on choosing an auto mechanic, as well as his story about the craziest thing he’s ever seen in the business, as well as my own personal confession.

McLean County Chamber of Commerce President, Charlie Moore

Cornerstone Business Solutions has a long history of participation in the McLean County Chamber of Commerce and I’ve written past articles about the impact the organization has made upon my business.  So needless to say, the MCC is much more than a merchant services client to me, but a big part of my company’s success.

I was extremely excited to have the opportunity to interview the face of the MCC, Charlie Moore.  He’s just celebrated five years in his role as the President and CEO of the organization.  It’s been incredible the advances the organization has had in that time, with Charlie at the helm.  After spending this time with him, I realized that his intelligence and gift for eloquent communication is only surpassed by his passion for the business community here in central Illinois.  I was literally overwhelmed by these traits.  However bad my camera, editing and interviewing skills were represented, I believe his message and delivery are extraordinary in the contrast.

I particularly enjoyed hearing about Charlie’s successful path to the MCC as well as the organization’s strategic mission:  To support our members, the Mclean County Chamber of Commerce promotes local commerce, advocates business perspectives, creates relevant programs and establishes relationships for business success.

The time I spent with Charlie certainly renewed my own passion for the organization and I’m looking forward to finding ways more ways to contribute so I can get a closer view of where he leads this great organization in the future!

Merchant Services Advice From Industry Expert Bill Pirtle

This is part 2 of my phone interview with  Bill Pirtle , author of Navigating Through the Risks of Credit Card Processing.  Part 1 can be found easily by clicking here.  I appreciated the chance to heard directly from a foremost industry author and trainer, his thoughts on the Certified Payment Professional (CPP) program.  I believe listeners will appreciate his top three pieces of advice in choosing a merchant services provider and I’m certain everyone will enjoy a laugh at his entertaining stories of his personal experiences.

I appreciated him taking the time to share with me for this interview and I always enjoy the camaraderie.   I’m definitely looking forward to seeing where the future takes him!

Navigating Through the Risks of Credit Card Processing author Bill Pirtle

Author Bill Pirtle’s first book, Navigating Through the Risks of Credit Card Processing is the best and most comprehensive guide for credit card acceptance available, and sadly even most of those business owners that know about it will never take the time to read it.  However, many of the most professional bank card representatives have utilized it as a resource in behalf of their clients.  Personally I’ve not only given many copies of this book out, I’ve also used specific chapters to help educate potential clients.
Since first reading Bill Pirtle’s work, I had the opportunity to meet him and get to know more about his philosophy.  Over the years we’ve also shared many laughs and grown to be friends beyond the industry.  I’m very proud of his continued success in the industry and I’m excited to post this phone interview where he explains his books, passions and how it all started.  Next week I’ll be posting part 2 of the interview where he’ll share his own top three tips for accepting credit cards as well as a few entertaining stories!

Dr. Brown shares Chiropractic Stories; TMI? You Be The Judge!

This week, Cornerstone Business Solutions is thrilled to speak with a long time credit card processing client that owns a Chiropractic office in Bloomington, IL.  When talking with Dr. Robert Brown of Elite Chiropractic Rehabilitation, you can never be quite sure what he’s going to say, but you know that it’s going to be a 100% real and engaging!  Capturing this interview was no exception.  He opened up and shared three unbelievable recovery stories and another story…that maybe he shouldn’t have!

I don’t normally do practice interviews before I feature my clients.  This time was an exception…but certainly not on purpose!  The reason we start out laughing in the interview was that it was actually our second time around, due to the person operating the camera’s failure to hit the RECORD button for the first full interview!!!  Perhaps I need to hire someone more qualified than myself to press that red, record button.  I can’t believe how patient Dr. Brown was, especially how pressed for time he is.  I do believe that the stories that came out in the second interview certainly added the entertainment value and was worth it!  I’m still laughing at his intern story!

I have the highest regard for Dr. Brown as a business man, a friend and an accomplished healer. Based upon personal experience, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his services to anyone!

Cranston Sparks, Mid-Illini Credit Union and Cornerstone Business Solutions: Focus on Business Relationships

When Mid-Illini Credit Union chose Cornerstone Business Solutions to handle their customer’s credit card processing needs, it was a privileged sign of trust.  Payment services for a banking institution is a critical service for their business customers.  The singular most important criterion a bank or credit union will have is that their customer receives outstanding service as the institution’s very reputation is on the line.  This week, I was able to catch up with the ‘face’ of Mid-Illini Credit union and get him to explain what makes them different!

I’ve long had a deep respect and admiration for the charm, intelligence and business savy of the distinguished Cranston Sparks.  He has a special way of building relationships with all he comes in contact with.   We built a friendship years ago while working together at various business and charity networking events.  Most recently, I’ve relished the opportunity to work with him professionally in his role as business development manager at Mid-Illini Credit Union.  I’m very proud of the working partnership that Cornerstone Business Solutions has in providing  Mid-Illini Credit Union’s customers with the very best in payment processing solutions.   Working hand in hand with a Credit Union and an individual that shares the same customer philosophy has been such a rewarding experience.  I hope viewers enjoy this spotlight on Mid-Illini Credit Union and Cranston Sparks as much as I enjoyed the opportunity to interview him.

Reiki Revealed with Energy Therapies Alliance

Bonnie Crosier, founder of Energy Therapies Alliance has a presence about her that has always tingled with warmth and energy.  Even before she started her reiki practice, she’s always been the type of person that you feel better just by being around her.  Although she started as a business acquaintance and then a long-time client of Cornerstone, she has developed into a very close friend through the years.

She certainly has a gift for impacting lives with her talents in Reiki and she has expanded her gift even further by passing her talents on to many other individuals.  It was with great anticipation that I planned to get her on film and hear more about her intriguing field of practice and about the growth of her business.  What I didn’t know was that she was going to have such a calming effect on me on a day that I needed it!  Also, it is very apparent that the spa like environment there had me almost whispering.  Although I didn’t get an actual Reiki session that day, I did leave feeling stress free and with a smile on my face.  I would highly recommend my friend Bonnie to those that have ailments of a physical or emotional nature.  For more information, please click on the site for Energy Therapies Alliance.

VIP on VID! Monster Pawn Interview!

Cornerstone Business Solutions is extremely excited to feature this incredibly dynamic, special client, Ed Pierce. We’ve worked with him and his wife for over a decade at their Monster Pawn location on RT Dunn Road in Bloomington, IL.  Since then I’ve seen his business grow at that location and several others.

A few notes from the interview itself; Ed is extremely busy and if you’ve ever been in any of his stores, he always seems in hyper-drive, handling multiple conversations and duties at once.  I literally waited for him in the parking lot before he opened, and was impressed that there were only two interruptions during the whole taping.  One was an employee that I thought I’d just leave in and the other was a customer he had to assist that I edited out.

During the interview I referred to a commercial where he and some associates do a song parody.  For the people that may have missed it, you’ve got to click on this link to see the video on youtube!  It makes me laugh every time I watch it!

On a personal note, I consider Ed a friend at this point and when I knew that I wanted to start featuring some important clients, he was at the top of my list.  Not only is his business exciting, but he is quite entertaining (as you can probably tell from his shirt).  I also knew that he would be supportive in this new venture of doing on camera interviews and patient as I worked the bugs out.  I hope the viewers are as patient with my interviewing skills, camera work and editing as Ed was with me.  I tried my best to do Ed and his business justice and I would certainly appreciate any feed back on the interview.
